Is There an Age Limit for Getting a Tattoo? Jordi’s Tribal Tattoo Journey
One of the questions we hear most often at the studio has nothing to do with pain, healing, or choosing a design. Instead, it’s something much more personal:
“Am I too old to get a tattoo?”
The truth is, there is no perfect age to get tattooed. Some people start collecting tattoos in their twenties, while others discover the world of tattooing much later in life. What truly matters is not when you decide to do it, but finding the right project and the right artist.
Jordi’s story is a perfect example.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
Jordi first walked into Folk Tattoo at the age of 53.
For years, he had admired Manu’s work, particularly his tribal tattoo projects inspired by the traditional art of Borneo, Polynesia, and other indigenous cultures.
Like many people of his generation, however, the same questions kept holding him back.
Am I too old to start?
What will my family think?
How will my friends react?
Does it make sense to begin such a project at my age?
They are completely natural questions, and ones that often prevent people from doing something they have wanted for years.
Eventually, Jordi decided it was time.
A First Tattoo Inspired by Traditional Borneo Designs
For his very first tattoo, Jordi chose a design inspired by the traditional tattoo motifs of Borneo, one of the richest sources of inspiration in contemporary tribal tattooing.
Borneo tattoo designs are known for their organic forms, strong connection to nature, and timeless visual language that has inspired generations of tattoo artists around the world.
After several consultations, Manu created a custom design specifically adapted to Jordi’s anatomy and long-term vision.
Like many first-time clients, Jordi arrived on the day of his appointment feeling a little nervous. But as the session progressed, those nerves quickly disappeared.
He found himself enjoying not only the tattoo itself, but the entire creative process that surrounds a custom project.
The Beginning of Something Much Bigger
When the first piece was finished, Jordi was genuinely amazed by the result.
It wasn’t simply about getting a tattoo. It was about finally doing something he had dreamed about for years but had never allowed himself to pursue.
What was originally intended to be a single tattoo soon became something much more ambitious.
During one of the final appointments for that first project, Jordi told Manu he was already thinking about continuing across his entire chest.
From that moment on, a much larger journey had begun.
As the sessions continued, regular visits to the studio gradually turned into genuine friendships with much of the Folk Tattoo team, especially with Manu, who has guided him throughout the entire process.
Building a Large-Scale Tribal Project
Little by little, the project continued to grow.
The chest piece developed into a large composition inspired by several traditional tribal tattoo cultures, combining influences from Borneo, Polynesia, and other ancestral visual traditions that share themes of identity, nature, and personal history.
Perhaps the most remarkable part of Jordi’s story is that before the chest piece was even completed, he had already made another decision.
He wanted to continue.
Not just with one more tattoo.
He decided he wanted both full sleeves as well.
Too Old for a Tattoo? Maybe Just Waiting Too Long
Jordi’s story reflects something we see regularly at Folk Tattoo.
In most cases, age is not the real obstacle.
The biggest obstacle is simply waiting.
When a tattoo has genuine meaning, when it tells your story, and when the project is developed together with an artist who understands your ideas and guides you through the process, age quickly becomes irrelevant.
Today, Jordi is still working on one of the most ambitious tribal tattoo projects ever created at our studio, proving that it is never too late to begin something you’ve always wanted.
